I have been ummm’ing and argghhh’ing on how to kick-start my blog for a little while now. I have so many ideas for this space and I'm excited that I am finally doing it! I have a glass wine in tow, a fresh vase of daffodils on the table, the kookaburras are laughing (but actually) and the sun is starting to close the day, LETS GO!
I feel like its appropriate to start off with my first styled shoot which I organised in October 2017. It was the first time I could show people how I use flowers as my chosen creative medium and how they speak to me.
When it comes to weddings I guess you could say I'm not a traditionalist. For me, the bolder the better and when I was planning this shoot my aim was to break down stereotypes (in particular in my local area - Newcastle and The Hunter Valley) and challenge the archetype of the traditional wedding. And this what I created with a fabulous team:
I wanted my arrangements to be explosive with eruptions of colour that came alive with vivacious energy. Bursts of red and pink are pared down with luxe gold tones, creating a warm, rich colour palette. I paired hardy natives with leafy tropicals that juxtaposed against the softness of garden roses and ranunculus' for a contemporary take on a whimsical, romantic yet electric look.
Sophie nailed it! Im so lucky to have such an amazing talent to bring my vision to life. Sophie bought her natural edge to the look and feel of the shoot, encapsulating the contrast of femininity and punk that defines the shoot itself.

The balance of subtle and striking visuals is expertly captured by photographer, Bronte aka Lazybones, who plays bold colours off against softer shadows. I was so pleased with the results and stoked on how Bronte captured and heightened the Botanica Bird essence.
An industrial backdrop sets the scene for the Part II and further challenges convention, with the romantic hues of red and dusty pink roses woven into the gate of a mechanic’s shop.
I was on such a high from this shoot and couldn't be happier with the choice of local vendors to capture the heart of Botanica Bird. The large, sculptural arrangements, bold colours, artistic makeup & adventurous photography provoke us to think outside the norm, and challenge our perceptions of femininity traditionally associated with archetypal weddings. We’re urged to be bolder in our choices, and with that, be true to our individuality and eccentricity.
